River crossing in the sunderbans – took the snap during one of the boat trips

Monday, June 29, 2009

The Sunderbans have more dykes / embankments than any other place in the country – most of the areas are lower than the water bodies. The embankments are the last line of defense for the hapless communities in times of rising water levels.

Aila

June 29, 2009
Cyclone Aila stuck the coast of India in the state of West Bengal on 25th of May 2009-Monday leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Crashing with astounding wind speeds into the heart of Sunderbans, Cyclone Aila has caused widespread damages and loss of life and money.
I have been in the field from the 22nd of June 2009, we have been helping people in the cyclone ravaged areas with shelter needs, non-food items and hygiene kits. Being associated with a leading humanitarian organization, I have been fortunate to be a part of a mission that creates an opportunity for people to come back into the main stream of life.
